The Gilda Burnett Scholarships

Big news for OLV parishioners who will be entering college or a Catholic High School next year:

Our Lady of the Valley Women's Club will be selecting three students from the parish to be awarded scholarships this spring from the Gilda Burnett Scholarship Fund: 

  • One $300 scholarship will be awarded to a student who will be attending a Catholic High School for the first time next year.

  • $500 scholarships will be awarded to two high school seniors who will be attending college in the fall.

Scholarship Applications Forms may be printed out by clicking on the appropriate link above or may be picked up at the Rectory.  Completed applications and supporting documentation must be received in the parish rectory by April 30 and should be addressed to:

This scholarship opportunity is open only to Our Lady of the Valley parishioners, so all parents, grandparents, and friends, please encourage eligible students to apply

Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Women’s Club’s objective is to foster the well-being of its members and the parish as a whole; raise money to support various parish activities; award two scholarships each year; and promote social activities at the monthly meetings and annual gatherings.

The Club meets on the last Monday of each month from September until May, inclusive.  Membership is open to any woman, eighteen years of age or over, who is a registered member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish. 

Annual membership runs from July 1 to June 30 and the annual dues of $10 are payable by November of that fiscal year.  Honorary membership is awarded to any woman of the parish who wishes membership but cannot attend meetings due to age or infirmity.

The Club’s social activities include dinners and opportunities to mingle while learning and/or participating in arts and crafts, music, dance, games, food preparation, and holiday gift preparation for shut-ins and children.  The Club periodically schedules professional speakers to give presentations in health, finance, gardening, fashion, or any other topics that the Club membership expresses interest in hearing.  Retreats and trips (bus or other) are considered as possible activities as well.  The Club strives to include at least one spiritual event for its members each year.

In addition to paying dues, Club members conduct fundraisers at least once per year to benefit the entire parish community with social events, scholarships for middle and high school students, and gifts for children and shut-ins during holidays.  Fundraisers may include bake sales, raffles, and other ideas that evolve as the Club determines the need for additional funds.

OPPORTUNITIES:  There are many opportunities to serve as a volunteer in the Women’s Club, either as a Club officer or as a member of one of several committees that are active at various times during the year.  All of the following committees are open to any member of the Club:

Entertainment/Banquet – Plans and coordinates banquets at Christmas and in May and plans any special functions such as bus trips.

Parish Festival Coordinator – If and when the parish schedules a large event such as a festival, this individual shall work with the Parish coordinator to involve Women’s Club members, as needed.

Scholarship Committee – Consists of at least three Club members; reviews applications from student parishioners and awards two scholarships in the spring.

Membership Coordinator– Collects dues and maintains an up-to-date list of membership for the Club. Along with her committee, plans activities to stimulate membership in the Club.

Nomination – Develops a list of candidates for election in the spring with induction at the May meeting/banquet.

Program – Plans interesting programs and activities for the monthly meetings.

Photographer – Individual is responsible for making a pictorial history of the Club’s activities.

Refreshments/Meetings– Coordinates members to bake snacks for the monthly meetings.  Also responsible for setting up, serving and cleaning up the kitchen for the meetings.

Our Ladies Caring Hands – Oversees the assignment of volunteer parishioners to shut-ins for the purpose of delivering Women’s Club gifts during holidays.  Also oversees the distribution of the Club’s gifts to those volunteers on a timely basis.

Reception – Plans and coordinates all receptions hosted by the Club as well as the annual potluck supper for Club members.

Sunshine Committee – Sends sympathy or get-well cards to members, as needed.
